Why is Nazi memorabilia not allowed to be sold on Ebay?
To be honest, I don’t know a whole lot about the Holocaust, but I do know that Hitler and the Nazi Party did terrible things to over 6 Jewish people and others “undesirables” living in Europe at the time.
But what they did was a part of history. It is something for us to study and learn from so that it doesn’t happen again.
IDK, why the sale of Nazi memorabilia is against the law in some places? Why is it not allowed on Ebay? Is it because of the people who would most likely buy the memorabilia? People who would most likely glorify the Holocaust? I don’t have any problem with people owning the stuff if they are just collector of the stuff. I really don’t care what people choose to own.
It’s going to take a very long time for people to get over that and many most likely never will. In my own faith there are those who view the cross as a terrorist symbol and it’s been many, many centuries since we were hunted, tortured and killed nearly being driven to extinction in the process. Some people never got over it.
Don’t get me wrong – I’m not saying people should just “get over it” either. It is a part of history and should not be forgotten so it hopefully doesn’t happen again with the acknowledgement that what happened was truly evil. There needs to be a balance there, tho. I can understand why Nazi memorabilia would not be welcome on eBay – they’re a business and need to maintain a certain image and that is one that Nazism isn’t exactly conducive to maintaining. But – Some of the symbols the Nazis used were in use for thousands of years and across many cultures as religious symbols and some of them still are in use to this day. Those things need to be able to be sold freely. The armbands – no. A sig rune, a life rune, a fylfot (swastika to the rest of you) – those are things we use in my faith and the swastika is in use in several other faiths as well. Those should be able to be sold.
I can understand the sensitivity there, I really can. But it is about time we started reclaiming those symbols from the hateful use they were put to during that time just as the christians reclaimed the cross from its violent past, both ancient (Crusades) and more recent (KKK).
JMHO, of course.
(and yes, Nazi memorabilia is illegal in several European countries)
