How do I keep my memories family / genealogy?

I have four cardboard boxes. Two of them with documents and images. They were under my bed for mothers umteen year and I want to store them elsewhere. They have some organization to them, but I want to take a few years and make copies, take steps to preserve some things etc. Materials are paper-paper-airplane-picture-bible leather gloves, old a lace-Stoll silver fox jumped leather booklet with well wishes written with a ballpoint pen; pages very fragile -. my grandmothers memorabilia of maternal education. maps, photos, artifacts, several handkerchiefs given to her by her students. any advice on the preservation of these would be great. I'll let the experts answer part preservation. I had only idea: You can take pictures of most things and burn them onto a CD with a family tree from FTM or Roots Magic, then a copy of CD to all your brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces. Later versions of RM, you can copy a single version of the reading program on a CD, as well as data selected. It beats a 60-page report 8 Ways to Sunday.
